Many people in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area love cola and other “soda-pop” types of beverages. Cola does tend to have a lot of sugar in it. However, many people do not know that there are tons of drinks that have more sugar than cola. Below are just three of the top drinks that have more sugar than a typical soda.
Although there are only 200 calories in an average 16 ounce Monster Energy Drink, there is a ton of sugar. Just one serving of many energy drinks on the market today such as the very popular “Monster Energy” drink has about 27 grams of sugar. That is equal to more than 13 teaspoons of sugar in one drink.
Specialty Coffee Drinks
Many people have the habit of stopping by Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts in the mornings for a cup of their delicious specialty coffee. Some people might purchase multiple cups of these throughout the day – even getting the iced versions during the warmer months. What people don’t realize though, is how much sugar comes in most of these coffee drinks! For example, the Dunkin Donuts Coolatta comes in a variety of flavors such as strawberry and blue raspberry. Although they are a cold refreshing drink (especially during the warm summer months), they are filled with TONS of sugar. One cup of Dunkin Donuts Coolatta can often have more than 20 grams of sugar in it. And naturally, the larger the size, the more sugar it has in it. Maybe you should think twice before ordering the next size up.
Since milk has been advertised as a necessary drink for strong bones and teeth, the typical person thinks of chocolate milk to be healthy. Many people do not realize that chocolate milk is actually filled with tons of sugar. A typical 8-ounce bottle of chocolate milk is around a hundred and seventy calories. An average 8-ounce bottle also has around 24 grams of sugar in it, (which is what make this such a sweet treat). Other flavors including strawberry and white chocolate milk also tend to have a lot of sugar in them. Some strawberry milk varieties can contain more than 20 grams of sugar. Not so healthy after all, huh?
These are just a few beverages that have just as much or more sugar in it than Cola. It is important always to read food labels and be aware of the things that you are putting into your body. It is also important to remember that just because something may be lower in calories, it does not mean that the drink is lower in sugar contents.
So now that you have all of this information, what’s the next step? It’s simple. Cleanse your refrigerator of these dirty drinks and drive down to the store nearest you to stock up on healthy beverages. (Shameless plug: You can find the perfect vehicle to take you at Dean Honda.)
