Visit #Pixburgh at the Heinz History Center this Month

#Pixburgh Heinz History Center

The #Pixburgh exhibit in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania explores the reason why people love photography and what makes Pittsburgh such an amazing city. The subjects range from the years 1850 to 1960 and include landmarks, ethnic festivals, and factories and mills. For example, there is an exhibit called “best friends” which is a focus on humans and their dogs. Their vast vault carries almost one million photos. Some of the photographs have never even been shown to the public before!

#Pixburgh: Video Experience

The #Pixburgh exhibit at the Heinz History Center has a video theater that shows 12-minute presentations on a wall-sized projector. You can view 56 photos that show you how Pittsburgh has evolved over the years. Expect to see thought-provoking photos of racial, religious and ethnic subjects. Famous landmarks such as the Kaufmann’s Clock and Three Rivers Stadium can also be viewed there.

#Pixburgh: Interactive Experiences

This exhibit showcases artifacts from the Smithsonian Museum. It’s a great place to bring your kids. There are several interactive activities to participate in other than looking at photos. There is a photo slide show where children and adults can pretend to be a museum curator. Also, prepare to attend the open forum where you can try to guess the time period and location of certain historical images. Finally, before you leave, visit the section of the museum where children can have a hands-on play with a photo matching game.

The Pixburgh exhibit is looking to expand their collection by moving it outdoors for an even more enjoyable experience. They are currently building to collect artifacts and photos that tell stories about poignant moments in Pittsburgh’s outdoors. For instance, Lake Erie and Conneaut Lake are two of the area’s largest lakes. At the museum, you might be able to view a swimsuit from the 1900’s, or see photos of 1950’s family boat outings, camping, or vacationing on these lakes. It’s truly an amazing historical experience.
